CVS Will Hire 50,000 Workers, Company Announces

CVS Health plans on hiring 50,000 employees to fill full-time, part-time and temporary positions as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread across the United States, the company announced on Monday.

Available roles include store associates, home delivery drivers, distribution center employees and customer service employees. CVS said many roles will be filled by employees from current CVS Health clients that have had to furlough workers, such as Hilton and Marriott.

CVS Health also said it will be administering bonuses to current employees. The bonuses, ranging from $150 to $500, will be awarded to pharmacists, store associates and managers, as well as other site-based hourly employees.

“Our colleagues have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to providing essential goods and services at a time when they’re needed most,” said Larry Merlo, President and CEO of CVS Health, in a statement. “As they continue to be there for the individuals and families we serve, we’re taking extra steps to provide some peace of mind and help them navigate these uncertain times.”

CVS also announced that, starting in April, it will provide up to 25 days of backup care for employees in need of child and adult dependent care. It is also giving part-time employees 24 hours of paid sick leave, in addition to the 14-day paid leave the company has allotted employees who test positive for COVID-19 or were exposed to the virus.

“The health and wellbeing of our colleagues has always come first. We’ve been working around the clock to increase availability of supplies and update protocols to ensure our stores are safe for colleagues and customers alike,” Merlo said.

There are more than 33,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States as of Monday, resulting in 400 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
